Bhubaneswar, Apr 4:
Five days after a woman employee filed a police complaint of sexual harassment against her branch head at a police station in the Odisha capital, the private bank today suspended the concerned officer ‘with immediate effect’.
“A case of inappropriate behaviour by a male employee has been received from one of our female staff in Bhubaneswar. The accused has been suspended with an immediate effect. The Bank’s internal committee formed in line with the prescribed laws, comprising senior ladies from within and outside, will investigate into the matter. Based on the findings of this committee, appropriate action will be taken against those who are found guilty of misconduct. The Bank has zero tolerance in these matters and believes in fair and equal treatment to all employees,” IndusInk bank said in a statement released today.
The state head of the IndusInd Bank K Surendra, who has gone incommunicado since the FIR was lodged against him at the Saheed Nagar police station here, has already been asked by the Commissionerate Police on Friday to appear before the IIC of Saheed Nagar police station and the zonal ACP within 14 days to record his statement in the case of sexual harassment.
Bank authorities in Odisha said the suspension was inevtable given the ‘grave’ nature of the misconduct.
“We cannot disclose this in detail. The reason is very genuine. If any employee does something like this then he would obviously be suspended and an inquiry would be launched into the allegations. Since this was considered as grave misconduct, he was suspended,” IndusInd Bank’s HR Manager Satyapriya Gorai said.
At least three women employees have lodged complaints with police against the state head for alleged sexual overtures and misconduct.
Members of the internal complaints committee from its head office would be coming to Bhubaneswar soon to hear the complaints of the women staff, sources said.
While a woman employee of the private bank located in Bomikhal area here lodged a complaint with Saheed Nagar police on March 30 accusing the branch head of sexually harassing her for the past several months, a few more women employees followed suit registering their complaints levelling similar allegations later.
