Bhubaneswar, Dec 18:
Two members of the ‘Go-Mitra Mahasangha’ today attempted self-immolation while they were staging a demonstration along with other members at little distance from the residence of Odisha Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy demanding regularization of their jobs and fulfillment of other three demands.
However, their attempt was foiled by the timely intervention of the security personnel present on duty at the Minister’s residence.
The two had doused themselves with kerosene when they were overpowered by the security personnel.
The duo has been detained by the police for interrogation.
The Mahasangha had been staging demonstration at the Lower PMG square for the last four days demanding regularization of their jobs and in support of their three point charter of demands.
The incident occurred when members of the Mahasangha were marching towards the residence of the Agriculture Minister and were discussing with the security personnel on duty to allow them to meet the Minister.
The two members who were carrying kerosene canisters in their bags suddenly doused themselves with kerosene.
Later, Maharathy held discussions with the agitators and assured them to fulfill their demands soon following which the Mahasangha withdrew its agitation.
“A decision with regard to the Mahasangha’s demands will be taken at a high level meeting to be held on December 22,” said Maharathy.
