Deogarh SP Sarah Sharma has confirmed of the exchange of fire between the security personnel and Red Rebels which started around 11 am today.

The SP claimed that security personnel achieved some success in destroying a Maoist camp. She, however, refrained from disclosing the details of the encounter as operations were still on.

Sources, however, said the Maoist camp had been destroyed in retaliatory firing by the security personnel and several articles seized from the camp.

The exchange of fire took place while security contingent consisting of personnel from Deogarh police, CRPF and District Voluntary Force (DVF) was undertaking combing operations in the Mara, Atula and Khunta forested areas under Barkote police limits in Deogarh district, which is adjacent to Bonai subdivision territory in Sundargarh district.

The Maoists are observing martyrs’ week beginning July 1 and were reportedly holding a camp in the Mara forested area. They fired at the security personnel who were combing the area first and the security personnel retaliated, police sources said.
