SEC allows observance of Local Self Government Day

Bhubaneswar, Aug 23 :

Doubts over observance of Local Self Government Day this year with model code of conduct currently in force in the state in view of the upcoming ULB polls have been cleared with the State Election Commission (SEC) giving it permission, though with a rider.

In view of the fact that model code of conduct has been enforced across all the urban local bodies of the State. Bhubaneswar  Municipal Corporation (BMC)  officials had sought clarification from the State Election Commission (SEC) on observing Local Self Government Day which falls on August 31.

The SEC while allowing the BMC to go ahead has asked it to refrain from laying the foundation stone for any project funded in any way by the state government or even by itself.

Politicians attending the event have been forbidden from making any new announcement or decision of the state government which will benefit the public.

The advertisements and hoardings prepared by the BMC can not have the name or photograph of any political figure nor carry any political party’s symbol.

This year, the event is expected to be a low key affair with just cultural events, a source in the BMC said.
