Bhubaneswar, Dec 27:
The Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) today alleged that the cornered state government has slapped section 307 of IPC on its volunteers, who were protesting peacefully on Tuesday, to illegally suppress the ongoing agitation of farmers.
Twenty six members of NNKS were arrested on Tuesday after they protested in front of the secretariat blocking the carcade of chief minister Naveen Patnaik.
Akshaya Sahu, who is on fast since December 9 fighting for the farmers‘ cause, and Rajnarayan Jena, another NNKS leader who is on fast since the day of his arrest, were admitted to the capital hospital on Thursday midnight after their condition deteriorated. But in what was indicative of the seriousness with which the police and the administration have taken their condition, they have not even been given beds and have been left to lie on the hospital veranda instead.
Both of them will call off their fast today.
Sahu alleged that the arrest of NNKS members was part of a conspiracy by the Commissionerate police. “If the CP slaps attempt to murder case against us for protesting peacefully, then it is easy to imagine what it may be doing in other serious cases. The incident shows misuse of power by govt and police,” said Sahu.
