Cuttack, June 30:
The High Court today issued notices to six state government-run engineering colleges in Odisha on a petition challenging their decision to increase their seats without having the required approval from the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to do so.
A division bench of Justices Indrajit Mohanty and DP Choudhury issued notices to the institutions, including Vir Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), while adjudicating over a petition filed by Odisha Private Engineering Colleges Association (OPECA).
OPECA had filed a petition in the High Court alleging that the six government-run engineering colleges in the state, which have increased their seats by over 600 from this academic session, didn’t have the appropriate approval from AICTE to do so as required by law of the land.
Notably, AICTE approval is a prerequisite for every technical institution before introducing new courses or increasing the number of seats in the existing courses.
The court fixed the next date of hearing in the matter for July 6.
