Rourkela, June 15:
Police today arrested a local journalist and another youth arrested near Rourkela in Odisha’s Sundargarh district for demanding extortion money from a local businessman and forwarded them to court.
Sources said Surendra Mahato, who runs a hotel at Titrikela and has a stone quarry under Bisra police station limits, had started receiving frequent calls in his mobile from June 11 from a person identifying himself as Batakrushna Swain, a local journalist of an Odia vernacular daily, asking him to give Rs 10 lakh to People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), an outfit engaged in extortion activities.
In his complaint lodged with the Bisra police two days after the incident, Surendra said Swain had also threatened him with life if he fails to deliver the ransom.
Acting on the complaint, Bisra police started investigation and arrested Batakrushna Swain (40), a native of Block colony, and Sachin Halwai (25), son of an advocate, of Chhend area today.
Informing the media, Bisra IIC S Das said prior to this case, Swain has two separate cases registered in 2013 and 2014.
