Bhubaneswar, Feb 10:
A group of SC/ST and physically handicapped Gana Sikshaks today tonsured their heads to protest against negligence and discrimination of Odisha Government towards their demands.
Hundreds of teachers today took out a rally on Gandhi Marg in front of the Assembly and held a meeting there. While some of the teachers protested by shaving off their heads, many others took to song and dance to express their plight.
“We have been protesting, but no one cares. The Government – that was supposed to take care of us – is dead for us now. That is why we are shaving off our heads as per Hindu rituals for the dead,” said Madhusudan Sarkar, a teacher who got his head tonsured.
“This government keeps making promises and keeps breaking them. There has been no concrete action to regularise teachers. It already has shaved us off on papers. What we are doing is only a mirror image of government action,” said another teacher Sanjay Kumar Behera.
Notably, the teachers had been agitating at Lower PMG area of Bhubaneswar since a long time now demanding regularisation of services after six years of employment. Their protests, however, have been falling in deaf years.
As per information provided by a teacher on the venue, while 69 Gana Sikshaks of Ganjam district have been regularised so far, the rule is yet to be applied in other districts of the state.
