The Supreme Court of India has allowed the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) appointed by it to inquire into illegal mining in Odisha an extension of four weeks for submission of its report on the issue.

Approving the plea of its appointed panel seeking more time, the apex court has granted four weeks’ time to submit the final report, which would decide the fate of miners and state government officials involved in the mining scam.

The CEC was scheduled to submit the report to the top court on September 15.

In its status report on illegal mining in Odisha, the CEC has to mention the views expressed by mine lease holders, officials of different state government departments and also the viewpoints of the M B Shah commission regarding inquiries and observation made by it.

“Since Durga Puja holidays are coming, it seems the report will now be submitted only after October 13,” said Manas Mohapatra, counsel for the lease holders.

The CEC failed to submit the report in time as it received the complete report from state government only last week. It had asked the state government to provide information listed in 26 queries.
