Promising Odisha chess star Saina Salonika added another feather to her cap when she won the World Youth Chess Championship title in the U-10 girls’ category at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that concluded on Saturday.
She became the second player from Odisha after Padmini Rout to win a world championship title.
Padmini won it in the U-14 category in 2008.
Saina topped the points table with 9 points after sharing points with Asadi Motahara of Iran in the 11th round.
Prior to winning the title, Saina had won champion trophies in Asian School Chess Championship at Colombo in December, 2010, Commonwealth Chess Championship in the Under-10 girls’ category at Chennai earlier this month, Asian School Chess Championship and Asian School Blitz Chess Championship both in the U-19 category at Delhi in 2012, and a bronze medal in the U-8 category in the World Youth Chess Championship at Caldas Novas in Brazil in November, 2011.
