Malkangiri, Oct 3:
The Mission Director of National Health Mission (NHM) today sanctioned Rs 50 lakh assistance for Odisha’s Malkangiri district in order to tackle Japanese Encephalitis which has so far claimed lives of 27 children here.
The amount was sanctioned to the Chief District Medical Officer to purchase medicine and necessary equipment, sources said.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the vector-borne disease rose to 27 today. While two children died at the district headquarters hospital last night while undergoing treatment, another died this morning.
Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, department secretary Arti Ahuja and Animal Resources Development secretary Bishnupada Sethi reached Malkangiri today to take stock of the situation.
“We will hold discussions with district administration officials in the presence of Animal Husbandry department authorities regarding steps to be taken towards isolation of Japanese Encephalitis virus infected pigs to curb spreading of the disease,” Nayak said.
