The Odisha government today announced a cash award of Rs 3 lakh for ace sprinter Shrabani Nanda, a day after she won the bronze medal in the women’s 200-meter event in the 21st Asian Athletics Championship at Wuhan in China.
“I congratulate her for bringing laurels to the country as well as the state while representing India at the Asian Athletic Championship in China,” Sports and Youth Services Minister Sudam Marandi said.
The Rs 3 lakh cash award has been announced as per the state sports policy, he added.
Yesterday, as soon as the news broke, Odisha Olympic Association (OOA) secretary Asirbad Behera had announced a cash reward of Rs 25,000 for the sprinter.
It may be mentioned that Odisha sprinter clocked 23.54 seconds to cover the 200m distance to win the bronze medal in the event. This is her first senior level international medal at any sporting event in the individual category.
