Commissionerate Police seized a huge cache of demonetized notes from a car in Odisha capital this evening.
Local police traced the scrapped notes worth Rs 27 lakh in Rs 1000 denomination from an SUV near a private hospital in Saheed Nagar area. In addition to this, a bundle of new notes of Rs 2000 face value was also found in the car along with the other currencies.
According to sources, two occupants in the car identified as Sumant Pradhan and Mamata Behera have been detained in the police station for questioning to ascertain as to why they were carrying such a huge amount and the source of the money.
While the duo was detained, another person said to be the prime accused accompanying them manged to give police a slip.
Pradhan and Behera hail from Alasa village under Satyabadi police limits in Puri district.
It is suspected that the trio had come to Bhubaneswar to exchange the demonetized notes.
The over-a-month old SUV (OD33J 8131) is registered under Bhubaneswar II, Regional Transport Office (RTO), sources said.
Meanwhile, police have seized the car.
