Bhubaneswar, Mar 16:
The Dhauli crafts bazaar in Odisha capital created at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore is lying deserted and abandoned today.
The shopping arcade was created to monetise as well as showcase the rich culture and tradition of Odisha to the thousands of local and foreign tourists who visit the famous Dhauli stupa every year.
The tourism department under the Dhauli peace park project had spent Rs 6 crores for Dhauli light show, Handicrafts market and Peace park & beautification projects . Other than the Dhauli light show the other projects have all failed.
The Crafts Bazaar has been set up on an area of 1.5 acres at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore sanctioned by both State and Central governments. The district administration, in association with the Tourism Department, had formed the Dhauli Development Society to look into the maintenance of the site containing six big kiosks and 10 small ones for the craftsmen to showcase their goods.
Work for the bazaar started in February 23, 2004 but it was inaugurated by Naveen Patnaik on April 10, 2013, .
But, after one year the bazaar lost its charm for the visitors and the craftsmen, due to lack of proper upkeep by the Dhauli development authority.
