Bhubaneswar, June 21:
The Odisha unit of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today condemned the decision of the Naveen Patnaik led BJD government of Odisha to increase state tax on fuels such as petrol and diesel in the budget recently presented to the state Assembly.
At a demonstration organised here, the party also opposed the decision by the central govt to hike railway passenger fares & freight charges.
“While inflation is at a 5 month high and is predicted to only go higher and the state government is taking credit for a surplus budget, this tax increase is most unfortunate and unwarranted. Given the crucial role of diesel fuel in transportation and agriculture, it will most certainly add to the inflation that is already breaking the backbone of the common man,” the party said.
Since the government is claiming a revenue surplus of 1120 cr in a budget with substantial increase of plan outlay, there is no justification for decisions such as increase in tax on fuel, AAP said.
AAP demanded that the government should reconsider its anti-people measure and withdraw the taxation with immediate effect.
It also called on the people of the state to come on to the street to protest such unilateral decisions by a government which was given an overwhelming mandate by the people of Odisha with the hope of keeping inflation in check.
