Mob ransacks nursing home in Odisha capital following death of patient

Tension ran high at a nursing home in the Odisha capital today as relatives of a patient, who died in the wee hours today, went berserk and ransacked the health facility apart from damaging two vehicles.

Reports said the incident occurred around 11 am today when the relatives and friends of one Tapan Nayak, who died while under treatment at the Panda Nursing Home under the Kharvela Nagar police limits.

The irriate mob ransacked the hospital premises and damaged two vehicles parked inside it.

According to police sources, the deceased Tapan Nayak of the unit-III Dalit Basti was admitted to the hospital on October 12 after he complained of severe stomah pain. He was told by the hospital authority to go for an appendicitis operation. The operation took place the next day but that Nayak’s stomach pain continued.

When Nayak complained to the doctor, he was told he had dengue. On Wednesday night when his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Kalinga hospital where he breathed his last in the wee hours today.

Accusing the doctor at the Panda Nursing Home of ‘criminal neglect that cost Nayak’s life’, an angry mob from the Dalit Basti launched an attack on the private health facility and damaged property worth several lakhs, reports said.

After receiving information, the police deployed two platoons at the spot to maintain law and order.

When contacted, the authorities at the Panda Nursing Home refused to comment.
