Nabrangpur, Sep 7:
A school girl, who was repeatedly raped by her 30-year-old uncle has given birth to a baby boy at the district hospital in Odisha’s Nabarangpur.
The girl complained of labour pain on Saturday and was taken to the hospital at 1 am where she gave birth to a baby boy. The weight of the newborn baby is around 2 kgs and both the mother and child are doing fine, said the hospital administration.
Since the baby was born prematurely and the mother is very young, Maa Ghara president Kadmbini Tripathy has demanded that district administration should take all their responsibility.
The girl was raped by her relative when she had gone to relieve herself in a nearby field at night, last July. After the incident, the 30-year-old accused Arto Chhati, who was a distant maternal uncle of the school student, had repeatedly abused the girl leading to her pregnancy. A village meeting to discuss this issue proved inconclusive. Police have arrested the accused and have started proceedings against him.
The rising number of school girl pregnancy cases in the state have become a cause of concern for the government. A five-member fact-finding team headed by National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) chairman Rameshwar Oraon, during its recent visit to the state, had expressed grave concern over the increasing numbers of teen pregnancies in tribal residential schools.
