Berhampur, May 17:
As the world struggles to tame the WannaCry ransomware which has crippled computers across the globe, the virus has reportedly affected the information management system of Berhampur city hospital in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
According to reports, the e-medicine services of the hospital have been affected due to the virus attack.
This apart, important data in the hospital’s e-mail were also hacked, sources said.
Ganjam Assistant District Medical Officer (ADMO) lodged a complaint in this regard with Berhampur Town police following which Berhampur SDPO launched a probe into the incident.
As per FIR filed by the ADMO, the attack has encrypted data of e-Aushadhi portal and Hospital Information Management System.
Hours after the cyber attack was detected at the Berhampur city hospital, the ransomware was also reported in three computers at the Purusottampur hospital in the district.
However, it was fixed in two of the computers after re-installing antivirus software while the rest one was displaying the ‘WannaCry’ message till last reports came in.
Notably, ransomware is a malicious software that locks a connected device, such as a computer, tablet or smartphone and then demands a ransom to unlock it.
WannaCry– the ransomware malware– has the ability to spread itself within corporate networks, without user interaction, by exploiting a known vulnerability in Microsoft Windows.
Computers which do not have the latest Windows security updates are at the risk of infection.
Hackers behind the massive ransomware attack have created havoc in over 150 countries by demanding 300 dollars from each user to regain control over their data.
