Resuming at 242 for 2, Mumbai lost skipper Wasim Jaffer, who added only 18 runs to his last night’s score of 125.
Jaffer, who had a 222-run stand with Hiken Shah for the third wicket, was dismissed by Deepak Behera.
However, Shah, resuming on 67, went to make his career-best knock of 170 before being trapped leg before by left arm spinner Dhiraj Singh after lunch.
He put on a 99-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav (28).
For Odisha, Basant Mohanty and Dhiraj Singh claimed three wickets each.
In reply to Mumbai’s 501 for 9 declared, the visitors were 79 for 3 at stumps.
After seamer Javed Khan removed opener Girjia Rout (4) and Niranjan Behera (0), Shardul Thakur got rid of Govind Poddar (2) while skipper Biplab Samantray retired hurt after being hit on the head by a beamer.
However, opener Natraj Behera (45) and Abhilash Mallick (28) hung on till the close of play with an unbroken 43-run stand for the fourth wicket.
