Rajat Choudhury elected Odisha Youth Congress President

Bhubaneswar, Sep 24:

Rajat Choudhury was elected as the youth Congress president in Odisha while his next contender Loknath Maharathy was elected as vice president today.

The election for youth Congress office bearers was held at the party office here today.

While Choudhury, who belongs to the Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra faction in the party, was elected president securing the highest number of votes (2870 votes), his next contender Maharathy, who owes allegiance to PCC president Jaydev Jena and incumbent youth Congress president Sangram Jena, was elected vice-president as he came second in the internal election (2063 votes) for youth Congress, said party sources.

A total of eight leaders had contested the elections for the president’s post. The other six leaders were declared general secretaries automatically. While the youth Congress has 10 posts of office bearers, eight posts were filled up.

With abysmal performances continuing in the Congress, the youth Congress workers are not showing much interest in participating in the polls since they do not see much future for them in the party.

It is evident from the participation of youth Congress workers in the elections. The polls that had started last month from the booth level in every Panchayat, only elected 5750 members against 21, 000 last year.

Similarly, while 16 candidates had contested for the youth Congress president post in 2013, only eight candidates contested this year.
