Koraput, Dec 25:
People Against Polavaram Project (PAPP) has decided to take up cudgels against the Rs 10,000-crore Polavaram multi-purpose project in Andhra Pradesh with a protest rally on January 19 in Hyderabad. It will be followed by a similar portest in New Delhi, the date of which however, is yet to be fixed.
Adhikari said that the Polavaram project being executed by Andhra Pradesh government on river Godavari will badly affect Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh as it will submerge hundreds of villages and thousands of acres of agricultural land in these states.
The project site, located around 80 km from Motu in Malkangiri district, would affect at least 129 villages and 4,932.22 hectares, including 1,451.51 hectares in Malkangiri district of Odisha, according to PAPP functionaries.
Adhikari was of the view that construction of the dam at Polavaram would not only submerge villages but also affect mineral resources and give rise to biodiversity hazards. He demanded an immediate halting to the project.
He said the fight against the project, which has already lasted several years, would be intensified further in the coming days.
