Bhubaneswar, Dec 2:
Six days after the alleged murder of school girl Mamata Samantray, Jajpur police initiated investigation into the case on Sunday.
Mamata, a class VIII student of Bhagabati high school was allegedly burnt alive after being gang raped on the night of November 26.
Based on an FIR lodged in the Badchana police station by young lawyer Udaynath Sahu on Saturday, a police team, led by sub divisional police officer (SDPO) Jugal Kishore Das reached Kharamanga village under Siha panchayat on Sunday and began investigations.
The forensic team, which accompanied the investigating team, seized some bones and ashes from the place where Mamata was cremated, police sources told OST.
A case (241/2013) had been registered under sections 302 and 201, the SDPO said.
Jajpur MP Mohan Jena has pressed for a crime branch probe into the murder.
Sources said the miscreants, who had burnt Mamata to death for fear of being caught, had put pressure on the poor parents of the victim and villagers not to report the matter to the police. But they are a terrified lot now after police begun investigation into the case.
