Bhubaneswar, Oct 22:

A 25-year-old pregnant woman of Raghunath Nagar of Dumuduma area under Khandagiri police limits in the Odisha capital was rushed to the Capital Hospital here today with burn injuries sustained after her husband and in-laws allegedly set her on fire in order to eliminate her.

She was later referred to SCB Medical and Hospital in Cuttack for better treatment.

The burn victim, identified as Mehnad Bibi, was one month pregnant.

The matter came to light after the victim’s brother Sk Julfak lodged a complaint with the Khandagiri police regarding the inhuman incident.

Local police sources said the incident occurred this afternoon at the house of the victim’s in-laws located in Dumuduma area in the city when she was asleep.

Bibi was severely injured and received grave burn injuries when the locals outside rescued her after hearing the loud cry of the victim.

Police said Bibi was set afire by her husband Mir Radris and her in-laws at around 3.40 pm. However, the reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained, they said.

Meanwhile, police have detained the victim’s husband Radris and are interrogating him to ascertain the motive behind the attack. The police are working on two possible angles – dowry torture and family disturbance – behind the attack.
