The Paradip Port Trust (PPT) observed the Port Day on the occasion of Kartik Purnima on Sunday. PPT chairman SS Mishra unfurled the Paradip Port flag and handed over the sacred Kalas to the Sadhavas who boarded a traditionally decorated Boita or boat.

In his address, Mishra recalled how the port authorities exhibited their commitment by taking care of the people staying in the low-lying areas during Cyclone Phailin.

Though operations at the Paradip Port were suspended, the port came back to action the very next day while many ports in the neighbourhood could not resume their operations for a week, he said.

Referring to the performance of the port, Mishra said “We have witnessed 30% growth in cargo handling during this year compared to the same period of last year. PPT achieved number two position in cargo handling. We have achieved 106 MT of capacity, which is the highest among all major ports of India,” Mishra said.

On the recently-signed MoU between PPT and Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL), Mishra said Paradip is going to be the gas hub for eastern and central India. The PPT is also in the process of selecting a partner for construction of a multipurpose berth for container handling, he said.

He also spoke about the CSR activities of the PPT and steps it had taken for environment management.

On the occasion, Mishra felicitated chess Grand Master Debasish Das for doing Odisha proud and Sambit Patra for his expertise in various languages.

He also handed over the key of the new air-conditioned ambulance to the Port Trust Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer to induct the ambulance in the port medical service.
