Bhubaneswar, Feb 1:
Armed with two volumes of the Shah Commission report on the massive mining scam in the state published by gulail.com yesterday, the Congress and the BJP today launched a fresh attack on the Naveen Patnaik government and asked it to order a CBI inquiry as recommended by the Commission.
“The government should hand over the case to the CBI immediately and Naveen Patnaik should face action for his government’s involvement in the multi-crore mining scam,” senior Congress leader and former minister Sarat Rout said on Saturday.
His party colleague and Congress chief whip Prasad Harichandan said that the mining issue would be raised in the state Assembly starting from February 3. “The leaked report of the Shah Commission has clearly stated that the mining scam took place with the collusion of politicians, officials and miners. The state government cannot escape from the scam. We will raise the issue in the Assembly session,” said Harichandan.
The BJP, the other major opposition party in the state, went a step further and demanded a Supreme Court monitored CBI probe into the scam.
“Only a Supreme Court monitored CBI probe will unearth the whole truth about the scam. The government, which had rendered the law helpless in order to favour the miners, must face the music,” senior BJP leader Ssuresh Pujari said.
Pujari’s comment, it may be noted, is in sharp contrast to the stand taken by party president Rajnath Singh on the issue during his recent visit to the state. He had refused to utter a word against the Naveen Patnaik government on the mining scam much to the chagrin of his party leaders in the state.
