Bhubaneswar, Mar 17 :
Expressing concern over the poor voter turn-out in Bhubaneswar over the last few elections including the last urban polls, the director of Director of Audio Visual Publicity (DAVP), Guwahati regional office and observer for the nationwide SVEEP campaign C.Senthyl Rajan today advised the Khordha district administration to take proactive steps to encourage people to exercise their voting rights.
Addressing a meeting of district officials including the Collector and all nodal officers as well as returning officers here on the Systematic Voter’s Education & Electoral Participation (SVEEP)campaign programme of the Election Commission of India , Rajan said the administration can emulate the Rajasthan model of public campaign through screens display sets in all the ATM counters in the city in collaboration with the banks.
He said SVEEP hoardings exhorting people to come out and vote should be prominently displayed at all toll gates, petrol pumps, cinema houses, shopping malls and other public places could help spread the awareness. The announcements made at railway stations about train movements could also include appeal to the people to use their right to vote, he said.
Rallies, mini marathon and road shows in the urban areas as well as launching a campaign through the facebook may also help the process.
Rajan also advised the officers to ensure the use of SVEEP display boards, posters and stickers on all government vehicles and passenger buses.
He also suggested the anganwadi workers be roped in and asked to persuade people not to miss their right to vote prominently displayed. He said efforts like EVM demo campaigns, rallies and road shows in rural areas could also be very useful in this regard.
Rajan advised the officers to make the best possible use of FM radio stations and cable TV network to spread the SVEEP message
Among others, the Khordha Collector Niranjan Sahu, ADM Manoj Patnaik, subcollectors Subrat Panda and Satyabrat Sahu as well as all BDOs were present at the meeting.
Rajan will undertake a trip to several areas under BMC , Balianta and Jatni blocks to review the steps taken to publicise the SVEEP campaign on the exercise of the right to franchise.
