Bhubaneswar, Oct 19:
The state election commission (SEC) on Saturday deferred the election to the posts of vice chairpersons of 17 notified area councils (NACs) in Ganjam district and the deputy mayor’s post in the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) to November 5 in view of Cyclone Phailin that wreaked havoc in the district.
The elected representatives of 17 NACs and Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the district were supposed to elect their vice-chairmen and deputy mayor respectively on October 22.
The Commission took the decision after the district collector said conducting polls would not be possible as all officials are busy in restoration work and distribution of relief materials to cyclone victims, official sources said.
However, other urban local bodies, which elected their representatives on September 19, will elect their vice-chairman on October 22 as scheduled.
