Jeypore, Jan 21:
Former MP of Koraput and prominent tribal leader of Odisha Jayaram Pangi today stirred up a controversy with his comment over liquor ban.
The BJD district unit president told that anyone who prohibits liquor sale loses in the elections.
“Former Chief Ministers J Jayalalithaa, NT Rama Rao and Biju Patnaik have lost elections for banning liquor in their states. Nitish Kumar will also lose election after five years. Any government which imposed ban on liquor has lost,” Jayaram Pangi expressed.
“Those who are shouting against it during day time are seen in liquor joints at night. Adivasis drink alcohol in good as well as bad times. Former Chief Minister JB Patnaik and Hemananda Biswal were after me when I banned liquor. I too lost the election for this,” the former Minister of State, Excise (Independent charge) stated.
The four-time legislator made these controversial remarks while speaking to reporters in front of Koraput Sub Collector’s office this morning.
While the political parties are fine tuning their strategies to put their opposition on a sticky wicket, the leader’s statement has provided enough ammunition to put the ruling party on the mat, given the campaigning for the three-tier panchayat polls all set to take off.
