Bhubaneswar, Dec 19:
Ruling BJD today criticized the BJP led Union Government for not providing required assistance to drought-hit Odisha even though it continues to announce and sanction package for other states with similar situation.
BJD Spokesperson Pratap Deb was referring to the November 24 announcement of Rs 1,540 crore package for Karnataka when he raised the ‘central negligence’ theme once again and announced to agitate should the ‘central negligence’ towards Odisha continue.
“In order to showcase its camaraderie, BJP sent a central team to the state at a time when there were no problems. Now that it is the turn to pay, the sincerity is missing. Shouldn’t we call it central negligence!” said Deb speaking to reporters today.
BJP, however, rebutted the charge.
“The Central Government has been considering the case for Odisha and the financial assistance will be delivered soon. There is no reason to worry,” assured BJP MLA Basant Panda.
Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra pulled up his gun towards BJD in the issue and highlighted their incompetence.
“There is this saying – a bad workman blames his tools. The Chief Minister of Odisha and his government don’t even try to present the demands in a way so that they can be met,” said Mishra.
Notably, 215 blocks across 26 districts of the state have been affected by the drought this year. The state has already asked for a financial assistance of Rs 2,200 crore to the center to address the issue.
However, even though two central teams have visited the state in two different phases in October and December, and the second team admitted to the drought condition in the state, there has been no financial assistance from the Central Government yet.
