Malkangiri, Dec 5:

One Maoist was reportedly killed in a fierce 3-hour gun battle with security forces in the Gamphakonda forests under Kalimela police limits this morning.

A BSF jawan was also injured in the incident, Kalimela Inspector in-Charge, S K Nayak said.

The gun battle began at about 10 am when a joint team of Border Security Force (BSF) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel was fired upon by Maoists while conducting search operations in Tundukibatla area to trace the three villagers  including the son of a Sarpanch who were allegedly kidnapped by Maoists on Wednesday, police sources said.

Scared villagers were found fleeing from the area during the gun battle.

One of three abducted villagers managed to escape from the Maoist camp during the gun battle and it is he who informed the police that one Maoist was killed and another, severely injured, police sources said.

It may be noted that Maoists are observing PLGA week while security personnel have intensified their combing activities in these areas.
