The Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police in Odisha along with Jagatpur police station staff today conducted a surprise raid on the New Industrial Area under Jagatpur police station limits in Cuttack and busted two duplicate zarda-gutkha manufacturing units and its godown.
The duplicate gutkha sachets were being sold in the markets across Odisha under the names of various popular brands.
Acting on a tip off, the QAT along with local police nabbed three persons who were engaged in the clandestine business of manufacturing duplicate zarda and seized huge quantities of raw materials used to manufacture gutkha. Machines worth lakhs of rupees were also seized during the raid.
The police have seized 13 mixture machines, 86 sacks of zarda (each sack containing 100 numbers of pollypacks) and a total of 516000 sachets, one stitching machine, one weight machine, 6000 empty bags, 18 bags containing 450 kg of zarda patti, 750 kg betel nut, Ilachi seeds weighing 150 kg, peppermint and lime 20 kg each, one Tata Ace auto rickshaw and huge quantity of packing materials.
The arrested persons- identified as Surendra Behera (45) of Bahugrama under Jagatpur police limits, Rajat Kumar Gahana (19) of Kaintha under Mahanga police limits (both Cuttack district) and Mukesh Kumar (23) of Orai in Jalaon district in Uttar Pradesh – would be forwarded to a local court in Cuttack tomorrow.
The Jagatpur police has registered a case under sections 468, 471, 420, 34 of IPC r/w section 78/79 Trade and Merchandise Act-1958/section 63 of copy Rights Act-1957 against the accused.
Further investigation is in progress, said police sources.
It is one of the biggest seizures of the zarda-gutkha at illegal manufacturing units in Odisha, they added.
