Kalimela, Feb 12:
Opposition to the controversial Polavaram project on river Godavari gained momentum as a large number of protestors from areas to be affected by the project in the three states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh staged a ‘jal satyagraha’ in river Saveri at Motu on Tuesday.
Under the banner of Peoples Against Polavaram (PAP), the protesters raised slogans against the Polavaram project being constructed by Andhra Pradesh government on river Godavari. They also shouted slogans against the central government before staging a jal satyagrah in river Saveri.
The protestors submitted a memorandum to the President of India at the local tehsildar office. Revenue supervisor, Ranada Prasad Mandal accepted the memorandum in absence of the tehsildar.
A case filed by the state government against the project in the Supreme Court is pending. Locals in the area are strongly opposed to the project.
However, Andhra Pradesh government is going ahead with the construction of the project despite it being sub judice.
