Odisha cricket team’s Govind Podder scored an unbeaten 77 to register win against Assam and their first of the season during the Group A Ranji Trophi match here today.
Podder’s run-a-ball unbeaten 77 guided Odisha to an emphatic eight-wicket win over the visiting team at the Barabati stadium here today.
Chasing a target of 142 runs, Odisha achieved the target in 35 overs with a day to spare.
The other top scorers for Odisha were Anurag Sarangi with unbeaten 29 and Rajesh Dhuper scoring 21.
Arup Das and Pritam Das picked up one wicket apiece for Assam in the second innings.
Resuming their second innings at 137 for eight, Assam failed to add a single run to their overnight total as Odisha uprooted two wickets quickly in just nine balls. Odisha speedster Basant Mohanty scalped three wickets in the second innings. He was adjudged man of the match for impressive match figures of eight for 53. However, Suryakant Pradhan was the peak of the bowlers for Odisha with five for 27 in the second innings.
The top scorer for Assam–Jamaluddin Syed Mohammad (42) — remained unbeaten at the runners’ end and the wickets fell within no time on the other end.
Earlier in the first innings, Odisha bowled out Assam cheaply for 92 on the first day of the match. However, the hosts were dismissed for five runs short of the target at 88 in the first innings.
The disciplined performance of the bowlers on a turning track did the trick for the Odisha team.
With this win, Odisha drove home six points and Assam failed to earn any point.
