Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a joint press meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo during his visit to the country today mentioned about Odisha’s Bali Jatra, an annual trade and commerce fair on the banks of Mahanadi river in Cuttack to commemorate the rich maritime history of the state.
“Both India and Indonesia have rich cultural links which was depicted during the parade on the occasion of Republic Day, this year. Odisha’s festival Bali Jatra was represented in a tableau of ASEAN-India relationship at the parade. This annual festival is an example of the fact that the thousand-year old cultural relationship between the two countries is still alive,” said Modi.
While addressing the Indian diaspora in Jakarta, Modi also gave example of Bali Jatra to highlight the close cultural links between the two countries.
Worth mentioning, Bali Jatra marks the day when the ancient Odia mariners used to start sailing to distant lands of Bali, Java, Sumatra and Borneo islands, all in Indonesia, for trade and cultural expansion.
