New Delhi, Dec 17 :
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday met Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in an effort to make the party agree for the passage of the Lokpal bill.
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi were also present in the meeting, said sources.
Sonia Gandhi is hopeful that the bill will be passed in this session.
The Samajwadi Party has been disrupting proceedings in the Rajya Sabha, where the bill has been tabled for passing.
The winter sessionmof parliament, which began on Dec 5, is scheduled to close on Dec 20.
Earlier, the Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath said that the Congress party has discussed the Lokpal bill with the Samajwadi Party and is expecting to pass the legislation in the Rajya Sabha “with consensus” Tuesday.
“We have discussed…(the) position on the Lokpal bill with the Samajwadi Party and are sure that we will be able to pass the bill in the Rajya Sabha with consensus,” Kamal Nath told the media persons outside parliament.
He said that the stand of the Congress party on the Lokpal bill is very clear and party vice president Rahul Gandhi has made it clear that the bill be passed under any circumstance.
“We will try our best to pass it with consensus today (Tuesday),” he said. (IANS)
