Bhubaneswar, Jun 30:
With the first summons served on Chitra Athwani, the friend/companion of PK Iyer, vice chairman of the Deccan Chronicle (DC) Group who was arrested from Hotel Trident in Odisha’s capital city on June 6 in connection with a Rs 357 crore fraud case, lapsing today, Commissionerate Police has decided to serve a fresh summons on her.
“Since Chitra Athwani has not responded to the first summons served on her to present herself before the Nayapalli police station is lapsing today, we will send a fresh summons to her,” Twin city Commissioner of Police Dr RP Sharma said here today.
“She is being called as a witness in the case. If she fails to appear before us this time too, a non-bailable warrant (NBW) will be issued against her,” Sharma said.
“The investigating officer in the case will send the summons under Section 160 of CrPC,” he informed.
Commissionerate police is presently investigating the nature of the relationship between PK Iyer and Chitra Athwani since he was arrested from a room booked in her name.
It may be mentioned that the Commissionerate Police on June 16 had summoned Chitra to appear before it within 14 days for interrogation in connection with Iyer’s stay in a room booked in her name.
During investigation, the police came to know that she also stayed in the hotel for sometime.
The summons was sent to Athwani at her Darbhanga address in Bihar, police sources said.
Iyer had first arrived at the hotel with Chitra at about 2 AM on February 14. They had stayed together for 10 days before Chitra left the hotel.
Iyer, however, booked a hotel room in the same hotel in her name and continued to stay.
So far, the police have discovered that the Mumbai girl works as an air hostess and shared a very good rapport with Iyer.
