PIL filed over Nacchipur boat mishap

Young lawyer and human rights activist Prabir Kumar Das today filed a PIL in the Odisha High Court seeking a high level inquiry, preferably, by the Revenue Divisional Commissioner, Central Range into the boat mishap that occurred in river Biluakhai near Nachhipur ghat in Jagatsinghpur district on May 9, 2014 in which five persons including four minor girls lost their lives.

Petitioner Das sought a high level inquiry into the tragic incident with a view to ascertaining the facts and circumstances of the boat capsize, identifying causes/reasons, fixing responsibility and prescribing measures/ guidelines to prevent such incidents/accidents in future.

The petition also seeks payment of compensation of Rs.10 lakh to the next of kin of each of the persons who died in this accident and to ensure proper and expeditious investigation into the accident.

While making the Odisha chief secretary and other concerned officials as opposite parties, the human rights activist has prayed for directions by the court towards proper compliance and enforcement of the Orissa Boat Rules,2004, use of life-jackets and other necessary steps that can guarantee public safety during boat journeys and also prevent such accidents in future.
