PCC Chief pulls up Odisha govt on farmer suicide issue

Bhubaneswar, Sep 12:

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Prasad Harichandan today launched a scathing attack on the Odisha Government over the farmers’ suicide issue accusing it of apathy, negligence and worse.

“The farmer died in Bargarh. Neither the Agriculture Minister nor any MLA visited the family. The Chief Minister anyway never goes anywhere. Rahul Gandhi has given his sweat to the ‘save farmers movement’. He came down from Delhi and meet the family of the deceased farmer of Bargarh,” said Harichandan addressing a press meet in Bhubaneswar today.

The ruling BJD was equally strident in responding to the Congress allegation and Rahul Gandhi himself.

“The man who doesn’t know anything about agriculture is going to certify others. This is a joke. Our MLAs have always tried to ensure that all sorts of applicable benefits reach the farmer,” said BJD Spokesperson Rabi Narayan Nanda.

Curiously, even as the PCC Chief claimed that the Congress party workers are excited following the tour of Gandhi and ready to work with new vigour, hundreds of Congress workers, including a sitting Sarpanch from Korei assembly constituency of Jajpur district, today switched loyalty to BJD in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
