Bhubaneswar, Dec 26:
Members of five political parties on Thursday, who visited the 26 jailed activists of Navanirman Krushak Sanghathan (NKS) at the Jharpada special jail here, demanded immediate health check on them.
Members of Samatakranti Dal, Samajwadi Party, Odisha Jan Morcha (OJM), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Ekta Parishad slammed the State government for its harsh action against the farmers’ body members.
The 26 activists, including Sanghthan state convenor Akshaya Kumar, have been on fast for the last 17 days. But the police administration is yet to conduct the mandatory health check up on them, the leaders of the party alleged.
“Since Akshaya Kumar and Rajnarayan Jena are on fast since last 17 days, medical test should be urgently conducted on them. Unfortunately, neither the police nor the jail administration have done anything in this regard,” rued Jayanta Bhoi of Samatakranti Dal.
The delegation also decried imposition of section 307 against the agitating members.
“They were not involved in any hardcore anti-social activities. They were only agitating peacefully for a genuine cause. Hence, there is no justification for slapping Section 307, which is invoked in cases of attempt to murder, against them,” said Bhoi.
Notably, the 26 arrested NKS members were forwarded to jail after they obstructed Chief Minister’s Naveen Patnaik’s cavalcade on Tuesday.
