Palm chopping case: Prime accused, broker arrested

The police on Wednesday night arrested the prime accused and his associate in connection with the chopping of the palms of two migrant labourers.

Addressing a press conference here today Kalahandi SP Sarthak Sarangi said the Jayapatna and Khariar police arrested the prime accused Parbesha Dungi and the broker Bimal Rout in a joint raid.

The police have so far arrested 5 middlemen involved in ‘supply’ of labourers and in addition two others have also been detained, Sarangi said.

According to police, the two accused, Dungi and Rout, had chopped off the palms of two migrant labourers – Nilambar Dhangda Majhi and Piyalu Dhangda Majhi – from Nuapada village at Jaypatna on Sunday night after they expressed their inability to pay back the advance taken earlier by them, while being forcibly taken to Chhattisgarh to work at a construction site there.

The state government in the meanwhile, has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the two migrant labourers who have been undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital at Bhawanipatna.

The state government has also announced that it will bear the expenses towards their treatment.
