With the state Assembly witnessing uproarious scenes over the failure of the government to open Mandis for paddy procurement, the Agriculture department today asked the Food Supply and Consumer Welfare (FS&CW) department for improvement of procurement operations of paddy and strengthening of marketing infrastructure for agri-produce.

“Procurement operations of paddy in the Mandis need to be improved and streamlined so that farmers need not wait for long period for sale of their produce. Marketing infrastructure in the state for agri-produce be suitably strengthened so that farmers do not face delay or harassment in marketing their produce,” said a letter of joint secretary of Agriculture department to FS&CW department.

The letter came after Sidhir Kumar, secretary, Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, who directed the state government to improve and streamline procurement operations of paddy so that farmers need not wait for long period for sale of their produce. “You will agree that it is not possible for a farmer to take back his produce if it is not sold and he has to come back again. Therefore, I am to request to kindly see that marketing infrastructure in the state for agri-produce is suitably strengthened so that farmers do not face delay or harassment in marketing their produce,” said Kumar.
