Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) was conferred with the prestigious ICHL Award 2013 for Excellence in Humanitarian Action in the field of disaster preparedness by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Raipur on the occasion of International Conference on Humanitarian Logistics (ICHL) 2013 held on December 2 & 3.
Eminent Scientist Dr Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission presented the award to Avaya Kumar Nayak, General Manager, OSDMA at the valedictory function on December 3.
While accepting the award, Nayak explained how the capacity building efforts of OSDMA during the last 13 years had paid dividends in saving lives during the cyclone Phailin in Odisha.
The award was conferred on OSDMA for its valuable contribution in creating greater public awareness on multi-hazard risk and vulnerability in the districts of Odisha, establishing Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), conducting community capacity building interventions at the sub-district levels, conducting mock drills in the multipurpose cyclone shelters in Odisha, closely monitoring Cyclone Phailin from 8th October 2013 onwards, ensuring the evacuation of more than ten lakh people and their safe movement to cyclone shelters in Odisha and minimizing the loss of lives due to cyclone Phailin in the affected areas.
Eminent researchers, professionals, disaster managers, students and professors from institutions/ universities from India and abroad attended the conference.
