Bhubaneswar, Nov 1:
The Odisha Phailin Response Forum (OPRF) formed by different volunteer institutions of the city submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday demanding assistance from the Centre through the Central team that visited the State to assess the damages in different cyclone and flood-ravaged areas across 15 districts.
The forum has urged the Centre to provide interest free loans to the farmers and supply of free seeds, fertilizers, and insecticides on a war footing.
OPRF gas also demanded immediate construction of houses under social housing scheme for those who have lost their homes in the twin disasters.
The OPRF has asked for the creation of new livelihood opportunities as well as the provision for 200 days’work in a year under the MGNREGA scheme, especially for the tribals and minority groups who have lost their livelihoods entirely.
Emphasizing on the great need to put in place protection measures in the state to deal with cyclones and floods, the forum has underlined the importance of creating more green belts and social plantation.
The OPRF has also demanded the setting up of a disaster management institute in the state very soon.
