Opposition to take up drought issue in Odisha Assembly again

Bhubaneswar, Dec 13:

Even though the drought condition of the state has already been discussed in Odisha Assembly, main opposition Congress plans to bring a motion in the house tomorrow to take up the issue again.

The party wants a debate on the subject given the magnitude and importance of the issue. Besides, it accuses that the package announced by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has not been implemented yet. The LI (lift irrigation) points continue to remain non-functional and the seed kits are yet to be distributed, as per the party.

Further, the Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra today accused that the farmer suicide continues unabated in the state owing to the faulty policies of the government.

“I can give you an example of a village named Hatisara in my constituency. Not a man has received any kind of financial support. There are two LI points and both have been dysfunctional since long. They were not repaired even though an announcement was made. The Government had also announced to distribute kits of gray and black gram for Rabi crops. That has not yet happened. This government is directionless and is in a deep slumber while farmers continue to commit suicide,” said Mishra, who represents drought hit Bolangir constituency.

The Ruling BJD, however, refuted the charges made by Mishra and claimed that the package announced by the Chief Minister is already being implemented. It just needs more time. Further, they don’t agree that the farmers committed suicide because of drought.

“Would the non-functional LI points start working the very next day after Chief Minister’s announcement or would we be able to distribute 40,000 kits the next day after announcement? We are doing everything we should to push for Rabi crops. Coming to suicide, it is a mental syndrome. It is unfortunate that all the suicides are being termed as farmer suicide,” said Senior BJD leader and Cooperation Minister Damodar Rout.
