Sambalpur, June 1:

Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) today provided 50 life jackets to powerboat owners who sail every day from Tilia ghat near Ib Thermal Power Plant to Jamadarpali ghat, located 10 km from Sambalpur, on the Hirakud reservoir.

Every day, hundreds of passengers travel through this Sonutikira-Tihura ghat by power boats on Hirakud reservoir in Sambalpur district. The life jackets provided by OPGC will ensure the safety of the passengers travelling by the boats.

The boat owners and passengers have also been given training by the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) team of OPGC lead by Umakant Pahi, Head (EHS) on the use of life jackets.

Today, each passenger was given a life jacket to wear before boarding the boat. The OPGC team demonstrated the use of life jacket and advised the boat operators to ensure use of these jackets by the passengers, to avoid any untoward incident and accident on Hirakud reservoir.

Locals travelling on Hirakud reservoir feel that many accidents can be averted, if the passengers take necessary precautions while travelling on boats. The life jackets will certainly be very useful as safety tools for the passengers. The locals have appreciated the gesture of OPGC expressing its responsibility towards the safety of the passengers.

It may be noted here that more than 30 lives were lost after a boat capsized in the Hirakud reservoir last year. The lives could have been saved if the passengers had followed safety measures while travelling on the boat.
