The meeting between the Ghantua Nijog and the Special Officer, Rath Yatra, Suresh Mahapatra on the number of ghantua sevayats to be present on the chariots during the annual Rath Yatra in Puri, the pilgrim town of Odisha, concluded on a mixed note this evening, said sources.
Sources said while it was decided at the meeting to allow a total of 42 ghantua sevayats atop the three chariots in accordance with the number of wheels in each of each chariot, the Ghantua Nijog demanded retaining the 84 number of ghantua sevayats atop chariot as per the practice in the earlier years.
While 16 ghantua sevayats will be allowed on the Nandighosh, the chariot of Lord Jagannath which has 16 wheels, 14 will be allowed on Taladhwaja, the chariot of Lord Balabhadra which has 14 wheels and 12 will be allowed on the chariot of Devi Subhadra, Darpadalana which has 12 wheels.
Sources said the meeting decided to allow 21 ghantuas each from the Puri Nijog and Bhatimunda Nijog of the Ghantua Nijog.
