Phulbani, Apr 7:
About one-third of the polling booths in Kandhamal district are in the Maoist-affected areas, Southern IG Yashwant Jethwa said today.
Informing this at a press briefing following a review meeting with senior district officials here, Jethwa said, apart from the booths where there are perceptions of threat from the Maoist groups, 25 per cent of the remaining booths are sensitive for other reasons.
“Keeping this in view, elaborate security measures have been taken in all these booths to ensure free and fair polls. Besides, the Central forces have intensified combing operation in the interior areas of the district to foil the attempts of the left wing ultras to disrupt the polling scheduled on April 10”, he said.
The Southern IG later visited Chitrakonda in Malkangiri district to take stock of the security measures in the cut-off region in the district.
