The incident took place after protesters, who were on a sit-in strike near the police outpost, confronted the police over its failure to trace the criminals responsible for the brutal multiple murders.

The deceased has been identified as one Pradip Behera of Tangi area. Two of the injured were rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack after their condition turned critical.

While authentic information on what led to the violent incident is not available, local sources said the incident occurred when the local people, who have been on a dharma near the local police outpost for the last five days protesting police failure to nab the murderers, lost their cool. Many of the angry protestors barged into the outpost to demand an answer and this led to the confrontation.

The police resorted firing after their attempt to disperse the mob through lathicharge and tear gas shelling failed to control the situation, a senior police officer told OST.

On 6 September, Saturday night, four members of a family including two children were found murdered inside their house at Shastri Nagar in Chandpur under Ranpur police station limits in Odisha’s Nayagarh district. The local people have since been demanding the arrest of the culprits but the police have so far filed to crack the case.
