One held for throwing suspected sorcerer into Odisha river

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Rayagada, Sep 13:

Police today arrested and forwarded to court one person in connection with the bizarre incident in which some villagers threw a man packed in a gunny bag into the swollen Nagabali river after beating him up severely on suspicion of being a sorcerer in Kolnara block of Odisha’s Rayagada district, police said.

Police said they have arrested one Sadanand Ataka of Veja village for severely beating up victim Bhima Rao Ataka of the same village and then throwing him in the Nagabali river after packing him in a gunny bag leading to his death.

Sadanand has been forwarded to the local court, police said. He is one of the two who were detained by the police for the incident on suspicion. The other person has been released by the police.

Police said the other 15 persons who are suspected to be involved in the incident will be arrested soon.

On the morning of September 8, some people had severely beaten up Bhima Rao after tying him up to an electric pole while he had gone to the nearby pond for a wash.

These people had then tied the hands and feet of Bhima, packed him into a gunny bag and thrown him into the Nagabali river.

According to the son of the deceased Chandra Rao Ataka, Bhima Rao was alive when he was thrown into the river.

The attackers suspected Bhima of practicing black magic and held him responsible for the death of a 15-year-old boy of the village.

Police, with the help of fire brigade personnel, was finally able to fish out Bhima’s decomposed body on September 11 from the bed of Nagabali river after three days of frantic search.

Relatives of the deceased Bhima complained that they failed to understand why police was not arresting others involved in the incident despite a complaint by them. Left with no option, they will be forced to stage a dharna in front of the police station, they said.
