Bhubaneswar, Dec 28:
The fresh reminder by the petroleum companies that the consumers need to have their Aadhaar card numbers registered with them by January 31 to avail subsidy on LPG gas cylinders under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme has triggered sharp reaction and anger among the LPG cylinder consumers in Khurda, Cuttack, Puri and Balangir districts as most of them are yet to get their Aadhaar cards.
According to sources, while in Balangir district, only 10 lakh Aadhaar cards have been prepared for 13 lakh consumers, in Khurda it is 14 lakh cards for 18 lakh consumers. In Cuttack the number of cards prepared is 15 lakh while in Puri it is 11 lakh cards as against 18 lakh and 13 lakh consumers respectively.
But what is worrying is that till date, most of the consumers are yet to get their Aadhaar cards.
Under the DBT scheme, a LPG consumer has to register his Aadhaar card number with the concerned LPG company and provide his bank account number so that the subsidy amount can be deposited in his/her account.
In case a consumer has no Aadhaar card, he will have to buy the LPG cyclinder at the market price of Rs 1079.
The DBT scheme was originally supposed to be launched on November 1 in these four districts.
